Street photography, a constant necessity to go out

Since I became a street photographer in London, and started to travel around with the purpose of shooting the daily life of the cities I visit, I started thinking about how many times did I walk from one place to the other without noticing anything that was around me. Well, I’ve done it so many times that I felt that it was normal. I used to go out thinking that my goal was to arrive to my destination as soon as possible and vise-versa. I used to think that things one might notice in the journey between places, would have been distractions, unconstructive images for what I wanted to do. Well, that was before I got my Sony a7 iii and started to go out and pay attention to the distractions.

In the nearly 5 years I’ve been in town, I went so many times to China Town that for me it was just a place were people used to go to eat Chinese food, or to have some fun in the pubs around, or in the casinos in Leicester Square. But I was wrong. The colours, the people and the different characters of the distinct streets that built London’s China Town are more than just restaurants, pubs or casinos.

There’s a culture, different from what we are used to in western civilisation, living, doing their daily life, in the middle of the city. If we don’t look, it would become very difficult to notice the magic of the place.

But my epiphany doesn’t apply only to the London’s China Town, it applies to every place I visited in the past that I thought I knew and now they are “equally-different”. In a way, they never changed: same stores, same construction; but they look different to me and perhaps that’s a good feeling to have, specially when carrying around a tool that allows you to catch the moment.

The pandemic brought to the world a considerable change in the way people used to behave and in the way the normal used to be. Camden Town in London, used to be a busy place: crowds of people walking around, dancing, singing, drinking, shopping, eating and talking loud. In May 2020, Camden was a different place and who was used to what Camden was, knows what was the feeling.

It was so important that I acknowledged not only the arrival point, but also the journey it self that I felt lucky to be able to have recognised this change. Thinking about it now, if I hadn’t had the opportunity to change my way of thinking and the financial possibility to buy my camera, I wouldn’t have been able to notice the difference - on the one hand because it was my camera that made me go out more often and on the other hand because I started to reflect that the journey also matters.

Suddenly my desire to go out increased and I started to visit places that I would have never visited in another conditions. My visits to the streets ended up being for walks without an arrival point. I started to spend more time in one single place, rather than passing by without even consider that there is life there, that there is something to be told, that there is something that may catch my attention, that there is something that may tell a story and for that reason that something deserves to be catch in an image. London has become an “equal-different” city, everything looks the same, but for me everything is different now; and that’s just because I was able to look at it in a different perspective, and that’s why I became a street photographer.
