Remembering the future is the final result of a Wigmore Hall and Guildhall School of Music & Drama collaborative project between one writer, voice and one composer from Guildhall.

The Voice works song programme is a collaborative project where new songs are developed through series of workshops and exchanges between young composers, poets or writers and singers, which are then performed live at Wigmore Hall each year.

In late 2018, Sophie Sparrow, Tane Stevens and I were selected to work together. Still in late 2018, after thinking about the instruments that should be part of the ensemble, João Lucas, Ed Holmes and Michiel Witttink were selected to perform this work.

During the process of sketching, the idea of combining the whole collaborative project with visual art emerged. The idea was to commission a visual artist to create and illustrate, inspired by the text and the music, the cover of the score.

Jérémie Queyras was born in Paris in 1997 into a family of musicians and grew up in Freiburg (Germany). Music has always played a predominant role in his life and the rich cultural and musical heritage of his European roots has a considerable impact on his approach to fine arts.

His practice ranges from portraits which convey emotions inscribed in particular moments in human faces, particularly those of performing musicians, to abstract intuitive responses to music and notable moments of particular beauty. 

He paints predominantly in oil on various surfaces, from stretched canvas to three dimensional objects such as instrument cases. His abstract paintings are influenced by various abstract expressionists and his vibrant colour palette can be traced back to the fauves.

In 2018 he was a winner of the BIG awards in Barcelona as well as RE:ARTISTE Show Your World in New York. His works were first showcased in London, New York City (Gallery MC- Manhattan, W 52nd st)  and Barcelona (Cage Gallery) in 2018. 

Jérémie Queyras currently studies at the Art Academy London under artists such as Tai Shan Schierenberg, Susanne du Toit, Edward Sutcliffe, Brendan Kelly, James Bland.

Remembering the future’s text was created by the poet, designer and musician Tane Steves after having had a discussion about poetry, literature, music, film and theatre. The title was inspired by the book of the Italian composer Luciano Bério Remembering the future also discussed in our tea-chat in an Italian cafe.

 

Tane Stevens is a poet, designer and musician currently studying at Guildhall School Of Music and Drama. He was a member of the Roundhouse Poetry Collective and since has gone on to launch poetry collective 'None Of The Above’, who have debuted two shows so far. He is a Slambassadors winner (and was subsequently anthologised in Outspoken Press' 'Heartful of Fist') and has performed as part of the Roundhouse’s Last Word festival for the last three years. He now co-runs London open mic night ‘Speak =‘ as videographer, designer and events manager and performs regularly around London.

New Zealand soprano, Sophie Sparrow, is currently in her first year of the Artist Masters programme in Vocal Studies with Yvonne Kenny and Marcus van den Akker at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London,where she is a Guildhall Scholar. She also holds a Bachelor of Music (hons) in Classical Voice Performance and a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting from the University of Otago, New Zealand.

Sophie has most recently worked on concerts and opera scenes at Guildhall. Concerts include Debussy Centenary and Heinrich Heine in Song at Milton Court Concert Hall, and scenes include Marie in Donizetti’s La Fille du régiment, Gilda in Verdi’s Rigoletto, Agrippina in Handel’s Agrippina, and Sidone in Lully’s Armide.

Last year Sophie was selected as a finalist in the New Zealand McCormick Opera Award, and a semi-finalist in the IFAC Handa Australian Singing Competition,Australia.She placed runner up in the Dame Malvina Major Foundation (DMMF) Wellington Aria, winner of the Ronald Dellow Memorial Vocal Recital and Norah Howell Award, and 3rd in DMMF Napier Aria. Sophie was guest artist at the 2018 Opera in the Garden in Whangarei, soloist in Saint Saens Requiemwith Bach Musica, and performed with The Freemasons New Zealand Opera Chorus in Donzetti’s L’elisir d’amore.

Sophie was selected to attended the inaugural DMMF Opera Studies programme, in association with New Zealand Opera, and was a finalist in the New Zealand Aria Competition performing with maestro Johannes Fritzsch and the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra (2017). She was also a semifinalist in New Zealand’s top competition Lexus Song Quest (2016). 

Operatic roles include Pamina in Mozart’s The Magic Flute (Opera Otago and University of Otago), and Barbarina in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro(Opera Otago).Musical theatre roles include Gabriella High School Musical, Aida Cats,andCandy Buddy Holly: The Buddy Holly Story. 

Sophie is a recipient of the 2018 Dame Malvina Major Foundation Auckland/Waikato Arts Excellence Award, and thanks the support from Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Auckland Opera Studio, The Wallace Foundation, Dame Malvina Major Foundation, and the Joan Kennaway Scholarship.

Edward Holmes (1997) is a clarinetist from Cornwall where he studied with Steve Clifford and Colin Parr. In 2015 he was awarded a scholarship (Henry Wood Accommodation Trust) to the Guildhall School of Music and Drama where he is now in his fourth year of a Bachelors of Music (Hons) studying with Andrew Marriner and Joy Farrell, and saxophone with Martin Robertson. Ed plays regularly with the major Guildhall ensembles including the Symphony Orchestra and Opera Orchestra. He also plays in other exciting ensembles based in London; these include principal clarinet in the Capital Orchestra and Brixton Chamber Orchestra. Other recent professional engagements include performances of Weber’s clarinet concerto no.1 with the Truro Symphony Orchestra, La Boheme with the Dorset Opera Festival and playing in the West End Christmas in Covent Garden with Brian May. He is also a keen chamber musician and is bass clarinetist in the Barbican Clarinet Quartet. Ed has performed in masterclasses with Pascal Moragues, Anthony McGill, David Campbell, David Howard and Tim Lines. He is also a previous winner of the Two Moors Young Musicians Platform competition.

Michiel Wittink (1995) is a violist based in London and in Amsterdam. After finishing his undergraduate degree at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, he’s currently pursuing his Master’s degree at Guildhall School for Music & Drama with Rachel Roberts. He  has performed in masterclasses by Daniel Bard, Saeko Oguma, Isabelle van Keulen, Sven Arne Tepl, Asdis Valdimarsdottir, Sophia Reuter, Jurgen Kussmaul, Daniel Palmizio and Wenting Kang.

For Michiel, chamber music is indispensable. He has been to several chamber music festivals such as the Harmos Festival, Orlando Festival and Aurora Festival. With his fixed piano quintet called ‘de Formule’ he won the 1st and audience prize at the Grand Chamber Music Prize 2018 in Rotterdam. 

He additionally played in several orchestras including the European Union Youth Orchestra, the North Netherlands Orchestra, the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw and held principal positions in the Chamber Orchestra of Berlin, Amsterdams Modern Orchestra, the Dutch Student Orchestra and the National Youth Orchestra of the Netherlands.

Michiel plays with a bow that has been lent from the Dutch National Music Instrument Foundation.

João Lucas is a Portuguese double bassist born in 1997. At the age of 7 he began his musical studies in the centenary Academia de Amadores de Música in Lisbon having learned from Fernando Flores, a former student of Ludwig Streicher.

In 2015 he initiates his Bachelor in classical double bass at the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa (ESML -  Lisbon College of Music) with Manuel Rêgo,  co-principal double bassist in the Calouste Gulbenkian Symphony Orchestra and two years later, after being awarded with the Henry Wood Acommodation Trust, he moves to London to study with Rinat Ibragimov and Luis Cabrera at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Throughout his career, João has enriched his musical training by playing alongside with both youth and professional orchestras; as a tutti player in several occasions with the Gulbenkian Orchestra in Lisbon, as a member of the Orquestra Sinfónica Juvenil (OSJ - Portuguese Youth Orchestra) from 2012 to 2015, playing in the Young Franco-German-Hungarian Philharmonics in 2014, in the Mediterranean Youth Orchestra (MYO) in 2017 as part of the Aix-en-Provence Festival and in the International Orchestra Institute Attergau, Austria in 2018.

He has performed under the baton of many conductors such as François‐Xavier Roth, Susanna Mälkki, Christopher Bochmann, Pablo Heras-Casado, Giancarlo Guerrero, Joana Carneiro, Nicolaus Richter amongst others.

Recently, João has attended inspiring masterclasses with renowned double bass players including Janne Saksala, Ander Perrino Cabello, Thomas Martin, Ödön Rácz, Vladimir Kouznetsov, Christoph Wimmer, Josef Niederhammer, Edicson Ruiz and Yury Aksenov.

João is currently finishing his Bachelor of Music (Hons) at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
